What is 'paper quilling'?

Paper quilling, also known as paper filigree, is a craft / art of creating intricate shapes from long, thin strips of paper.  The strips are rolled, pinched or twisted, before being glued together to create decorative designs and beautiful artwork. While its exact origins are a mystery, paper quilling is thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt

The process of paper quilling typically involves:

  1. Cutting Paper Strips: Thin strips of paper, usually between 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch wide, are cut from sheets of paper. These strips can be of various colors, thicknesses and patterns.
  2. Rolling and Shaping: The paper strips are rolled around a quilling tool or a pin to create coils. These coils can be pinched, shaped, or manipulated into various forms like spirals, teardrops, or tight coils.
  3. Arranging and Gluing: The shaped paper elements are then arranged and glued onto a canvas, background or onto other paper elements to create intricate designs and patterns.

Paper quilling is used to make a variety of items, including greeting cards, framed artwork, and decorations. Its versatility and the precision required for intricate designs make it a popular and cherished craft!
